MYTH AND FACTS ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA

May 24th is celebrated as schizophrenia day to spread awareness about this illness and eradicate myth and superstition around mental illnesses in general. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder in which distortion of thought and perception lead to lack of touch with reality, poor insight and judgement. According to recent NMH survey, prevalence of schizophrenia in Indian population is 0.5% for current and 1.4% for lifetime experience.

Women and men are different not only in their obvious physical appearance , but also in their psychological attributes. Women and men differ in the way they communicate, deal in relationships, express their feelings, and react to stress. Mental health problems affect both men and women but not in same ways. Women’s mental health is a topic of concern to not just women themselves but also people around them. When a women suffer from poor mental health, it negatively affect her personal life, physical health and financial status. It can also contribute to difficulty performing well at workplace, participating fully in life and having healthy relationships.
