Women and mental health

Women and men are different not only in their obvious physical appearance , but also in their psychological attributes. Women and men differ in the way they communicate, deal in relationships, express their feelings, and react to stress. Mental health problems affect both men and women but not in same ways. Women’s mental health is a topic of concern to not just women themselves but also people around them. When a women suffer from poor mental health, it negatively affect her personal life, physical health and financial status. It can also contribute to difficulty performing well at workplace, participating fully in life and having healthy relationships. Now a day, Mental health issues among women is on rise and matter of concern. Depression, anxiety, panic attack, postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, postpartum psychosis somatoform disorder, tension headache are common problem in female population.
  • According to the WHO,2023, depression is currently 50% more common in women than in men.
  • Women are twice as commonly diagnosed with anxiety as men.
  • 75% of mental health issues are established before age of 24, and young women have emerged as highest risk group for mental ill health.
  • One in five women(19%) compare to one in eight men(12%) experience common mental disorder.
  • 25.7% young women have self harmed – more than twice the rate for men.
  • One in seven young women (16-24%) have PTSD compared to young men 3.6%.
  • 78% of women who have faced extensive physical and sexual violence have experienced life threatening trauma and 16% have PTSD.
  • Suicide is the third most common reason for girls to contact childline.
  • About 15% of female suffering from Post-partum depression, which is emerging concern in Indian population.
